Université Sainte-Anne is a certified centre for the Test d’évaluation de français (TEF).

TEF Canada has been designated by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and Québec’s Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration (MIFI) for all economic immigration programs that require, or accept, proof of language skills.

TEF Canada results are also considered acceptable proof for Canadian citizenship applications.

Important: the TEF must be taken in person at our Halifax Campus. 

Sessions

On the day of the session, you'll need to bring your TEF invitation and the ID you provided on the registration form.

The TEF takes place from 9:15 am to 3 pm at our Halifax campus (100-5657, Spring Garden Rd) :

  • 9:15-9:30 am: photos and signatures
  • 9:30 am-12:30 pm: reading comprehension, listening comprehension and written expression tests (on computer)
  • 12:40-3 pm: oral expression (approximately 30 mn for each candidate)

Tests

  • Reading comprehension
    • Objective: Measure your ability to read and understand written documents.
    • Content: 4 sections – 40 questions
    • Duration: 1 hour
    • Format: Multiple choice questionnaire (MCQ)
  • Listening comprehension
    • Objective: Measure your ability to understand spoken French by listening to audio documents.
    • Content: 4 sections – 40 questions
    • Duration: 40 minutes
    • Format: Multiple choice questionnaire (MCQ)
  • Written expression
    • Objective: Measure your ability to express yourself in written French.
    • Content: 2 sections 
    • Duration: 1 hour
    • Format: The test is divided into two sections, A and B.
      • Section A – 25 minutes / Write the continuation of an article (80 words minimum)
      • Section B – 35 minutes / Express and justify a point of view (200 words minimum) 
  • Oral expression
    • Objective: Measure your ability to communicate orally with an interlocutor.
    • Content: 2 sections 
    • Duration: 15 minutes in total  
    • Format: The test is divided into two sections, A and B.
      • Section A – 5 minutes / Obtaining information
      • Section B – 10 minutes / Expressing an argument to convince

Test results

After finishing your test, you will receive a certificate of completion. Each certificate is detailed and personalized. For each test, it gives you: the number of points obtained, the level reached and a commentary on your current skills in general French.

You will receive your certificate within two (2) to four (4) weeks. Results are valid for two (2) years.

No diploma is required to take the TEF Canada test. You can take the test more than once, provided you wait 30 days before retaking the test.
